The ever-increasing displays of our days require content with ever-higher AV image resolutions, which places enormous demands on the transmission paths in terms of bandwidth. If these become longer and longer due to the also constantly growing room sizes, then conventional copper cables quickly reach their limits. The use of optical fibers provides a remedy here.
Mixed Mode
AOC (Active Optical Cable) cables use hybrid cable material consisting of optical fibers and copper conductors. This is why AOC cables are often simply called ‘hybrid cables’. The technical trick is to split the AV signal into the actual useful signal, which with its high bandwidth requirement of up to 48 Gbit/s is sent as light pulses over the optical fibers, and the more frugal control signals, which are satisfied with the copper wires even over longer distances. This significantly simplifies the required converter technology, enables remote power supply through the cable, thus combining the advantages of the robust copper wires with those of the optical fibers and providing the user with the best of both worlds.

The highly compressed converter technology for converting the electrical AV signals to fiber optic and back again is located in the connectors of the cables and is supplied with voltage directly from the HDMI or DisplayPort interface. The cables therefore have a predefined running direction: the connectors are marked ‘Display’ and ‘Source’.
For both HDMI and Displayport cables, the supported color depth of 10 bits/color channel enables HDR display of video content with the extended BT.2020 color space and high contrast range. Content can thus be reproduced with the greatest detail and clarity even at higher refresh rates. The gold-plated pins and connector sleeves ensure corrosion resistance and long-term signal consistency.
This combined copper and fiber optic cable design results in very low electromagnetic radiation and high resistance to EMI and RF interference during operation. It makes these cables the ideal transmission medium for any scenario, for example in the industrial or medical sector, but also for digital signage, DooH or home applications.
