Founded by Kurt Lindenberg in a small apartment in Breslau, Germany, ‘Kurt Lindenberg Industrievertretung’ began as a family business that sold petrol lamps and early electrical equipment.
In 1948 we moved to Mannheim where Lindy Germany is still based today and in 1949, Kurt’s son, Klaus joined the company. Under this father and son joint leadership the company’s attention turned to industrial electrical and electronic products.
The best-selling products were cable laying technology and power tools.
Distribution quickly expanded to cover the whole of Germany as the burgeoning company went from strength to strength.
1940s
As demand for radio and television exploded in the 1950s, our product range expanded to include the popular Kuba radio and TV furniture.
The Kuba Komet combined a television, radio, record player and speaker in an avant garde angular housing and is now seen as an iconic piece of 1950s German design.
1952
In 1968, products were sold for the first time under the company’s own brand name ‘Lindy’. This represented the family nickname of ‘Lindi’. With the ‘Y’ being included to make the brand sound more international. The philosophy represented by this new brand name was one of quality and service at the heart of everything we do.
1960s
A moment that would revolutionise Lindy was the introduction of electronic kits from the Danish manufacturer, Josty. These kits, which allowed hobbyists to build their own radios, amplifiers and disco lamps, became incredibly successful.
1960s
From the 1970s onwards, the product range shifted almost entirely to electronic kits and the first electronic games machines.
1970s
The electronic desktop games were manufactured by the famous Japanese company, Gakken and licenced by Lindy. They became an incredibly popular and important part of the Lindy range.
Late 1970s
The 1980s saw a 3rd generation of the family join the company as Klaus’s sons, Jürgen and Peter, set out a period of international expansion as Lindy offices were to open all around the world.
Gerry Casey, an old friend of Klaus Lindenberg was the UK agent for Josty and ran his own company manufacturing audio, TV and computer cables. Gerry convinced Klaus to include some of these cables for display at a trade show.
In a small corner at a European trade show ten computer cables were displayed. These cables became an overwhelming sales hit. All the major department stores and dealers ordered in large quantities. This success would lay the foundation for what would eventually become our world leading cable range.
1986
Lindy continued to grow and in 1986 Lindy Italy was formed and headed up by Peter Lindenberg.
In 1987 Lindy UK was launched by Gerry Casey and Klaus Lindenberg, based in the North-East of England, where Lindy UK is still operating from today.
1980s
During the 1990s the product range was expended to include a wide selection of computer accessories. Products such as KVM switches became important and complemented the extensive choice of PC cables perfectly. USB technology began to be introduced and became a key part of the Lindy product offering.
1990s
In 1992, Gerry’s son, Darren joined the marketing department of Lindy UK before becoming managing director in 1995.
More success came as in 2001, Lindy UK moved into a new home, a modern office with extensive warehouse facilities.
Further expansion followed with new offices in Switzerland, France, USA, Australia and Austria. An international office was also created to serve a variety of locations including the Middle East and South America.
To differentiate our products and emphasize the Lindy identity, many of our core cable products included distinctive red grommets and thumb screws. This made the cables instantly recognisable and became a symbol of Lindy quality and reliability.
1990s
In the 2000s, there were increasing synergies between the IT and burgeoning Audio Visual industries. Lindy was ideally placed to leverage our experience as a connection specialist and integrate a large range of AV products and accessories.
To reinforce this new direction, a new logo was introduced incorporating the tag line: ‘Connection Perfection’. This perfectly represented Lindy’s DNA as a premier connectivity technology provider.
2000s
We began to expand further outside of Europe into Asia with new warehouses and offices opening in China, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
2000s
This international expansion was mirrored in Germany where a new logistics centre was created to serve the increasing number of people who purchase Lindy products.
2000s
The launch of our Cable Lines concept provided customers with a unique proposition to help choose the right cable solution based on price, feature set, performance and design. The concept was applied across our core cable range including HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and USB.
2018
In 2019, we opened our prestigious new German head office. A modern, open plan building with extensive conference and collaborative working facilities.
2019
The future of Lindy will remain in the family as Juergen’s daughter, Laura, joined the company to secure the Lindenberg legacy and help lead the Lindy group into exciting new opportunities.
2022 represents our 90th Anniversary year.
We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings and have developed into an international group working together to enhance the Lindy brand around the world.
